Is my data stored or shared?

When you use Sam, your messages are transmitted — but names and places are replaced with placeholders first (pseudonymization), then sent to Mistral AI in France. What is Sam?

Sam is your coach, your buddy, or your gentle friend. Whatever you need right now. Powered by Mistral AI (European), Sam adapts to your tone, knows your situation, and supports you without judgment. Sam is not a therapist replacement.

Do I have to stop drinking completely?

No. OONVAA adapts to your goal: Observe, Reduce, or Abstinence. You decide what works for you. You can change your goal at any time.

Is the app available for iPhone?

Currently Android only. The iOS version is planned.

Which AI is used?

We exclusively use Mistral AI, a European AI provider based in Paris. Your messages are pseudonymized on your device before transmission: names and places are replaced with placeholders.

Does the app replace therapy?

No. OONVAA is a companion, not a replacement for professional help. If you have heavy alcohol consumption or physical dependency, please consult a doctor. The app includes crisis hotline numbers for emergencies.

What helps with alcohol cravings?

Cravings usually pass within 15–20 minutes. OONVAA includes Urge Surfing, a technique to observe and ride out cravings without acting on them. The Toolbox also offers breathing exercises and a distraction list for acute moments.

How do I stop drinking?

The first step is awareness: track how much you drink and why. OONVAA guides you through onboarding to clarify your goal. Reduce, pause, or abstain completely. Tools like a sobriety timer, AI companion Sam, and the Toolbox support you day by day. For physical dependency, always consult a doctor first.

What happens to the body when you stop drinking?

Many people notice better sleep and more energy within a few days. Over the following weeks and months, the body can recover in various ways — the liver, for example — and the risk of several health conditions may decrease. How quickly and how much varies a lot from person to person. OONVAA shows a general timeline of what can change over time. Note: with physical dependency, sudden withdrawal can be dangerous — please seek medical guidance.

How long until you feel better after quitting alcohol?

Many people notice first improvements within a few days — better sleep, less bloating, more energy. For others it takes longer, and that’s normal too. OONVAA helps you track how you feel over time. If you’re worried about withdrawal symptoms, please consult a doctor.

How much money do you save without alcohol?

It depends entirely on your previous consumption. As an example: two drinks a day at €3 each add up to around €2,000 over a year. The built-in Cost Calculator shows your personal savings based on your own data.

What is Urge Surfing?

Urge Surfing is a mindfulness-based technique for handling cravings. Instead of fighting or suppressing the urge, you observe it like a wave that rises and falls on its own. Research suggests urge surfing can help reduce the likelihood of acting on a craving. OONVAA includes a guided Urge Surfing exercise in the Toolbox.

How do I stay motivated after a relapse?

A relapse is not a failure. It’s information. OONVAA doesn’t judge you: you can reset your timer at any time and keep going. Sam supports you without blame. Many people need several attempts before long-term change sticks. That’s normal and human.
